Guwahati, May 26 (Reporter) The Assam police have detained several suspected Bangladeshi citizens in various districts of the state following the Central government's instruction to verify illegal Bangladeshi and Myanmar citizens across states and Union Territories. Hundreds of suspected persons have been picked up for the last three days by members of Assam police and efforts are in to verify their identity, officials said. "It is a routine process. We are going to verify their identity. If they are Indian, there is no issue, but if they are not genuine Indian citizens, they would be sent to the "illegal foreigners holding area" which is located in Matia in Goalpara district," said a senior Assam police officer on Monday. He said it is difficult to tell the exact number of the illegal foreigners from Bangladesh as it is an ongoing process and the numbers are constantly increasing. The recent MHA instruction on detecting foreigners came following the Centre's renewed push against undocumented illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The MHA has also issued directions to the DGs of BSF and Assam Rifles, the two forces that guard the indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar border. While the Assam police have remained tight-lipped over the developments, sources said that the operation against the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been intensified with many such people being picked up from Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Morigaon , Golaghat and other districts...////...
