Gangtok, June 4 (Reporter) Defying adverse weather conditions and a hazardous terrain, the Indian Army on Wednesday intensified the search operation to locate six of its missing persons, including Lt Col Pritpal Singh Sandhu, his wife Squadron Leader Aarti Sandhu (retd), and their daughter Amayra Sandhu, who remain untraced since a massive landslide flattened an army camp at Chaten, Lachen, in North Sikkim on Sunday evening.
Among other missing are Subedar Dharamveer, Naik Sunilal Muchahary and Sepoy Sainudheen PK. The bodies of two other personnel Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur and a porter Abhishek Lakhadia were retrieved the following day from the rubble.
Four other personnel have been rescued and airlifted to the Army hospital at Tadong.
The Army has deployed specialised teams and engineering equipment. However, the ongoing efforts have been significantly hampered by extremely bad weather, unstable ground, and the challenging high-altitude terrain, a defence spokesman said on Wednesday.
The NDRF also deployed its experts in the search operation since Tuesday braving the hazardous terrain conditions as Lachen village, the main hub of tourism in the region, has been completely cut off. The Army has established foot connectivity to the village and reached out to 113 stranded tourists, who will be evacuated soon.
On Tuesday, 30 tourists, including some foreign nationals, were successfully airlifted by the military helicopters to Gangtok ...////...
