Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu), April 30 (Reporter) Four Indian fishermen sustained injuries, one of them grievously in an attack by suspected Sri Lankan pirates when they were fishing at mid sea.
Fisheries officials said here on Tuesday that the fishermen, Murugavel, Chinnaiyan and Muthu hailing from Akkaraipettai coastal village had ventured into the sea for fishing in a country boat owned by Murugan of Serudur coastal hamlet on Monday morning.
When they were fishing 15 nautical miles south-east of Kodiakkarai coast, the pirates who came in a fast craft confronted the Indian fishers.
They attacked the Indian fishermen with iron rods late Monday and wooden logs before fleeing with GPS gadget, fishing nets and their catch.
The injured fishermen returned to the shore Tuesday morning.
Murugan, who sustained serious injuries and was bleeding from the head and hand was admitted to the Nagapattinam government medical college hospital at Orathur, while the three others were treated as out patients.
