Srinagar, Feb 15 (Reporter) A young B Tech Computer Science Engineer from Naina village in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district Saqlain Yousuf has developed KashmiriGPT- the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered Kashmiri language assistant, bridging the gap between Kashmiri and AI.
'KashmiriGPT' responds to queries related to Kashmiri culture, history, and traditions in the Kashmiri language.
Having completed his degree in 2023, Yousuf is dedicated to integrating his mother tongue with AI-driven technology.
"All major languages of the country are available on ChatGPT, except Kashmiri. This realisation pushed me to take action," Yousuf told UNI.
Concerned about the vulnerability of the language, he devoted over five months to coding, testing, and refining the KashmiriGPT, which is still in its initial phase.
More than just a translation tool, this AI model provides insights into Kashmir’s ancient history and culture while also serving as a language-learning resource. Yousuf believes that the platform can bridge the gap between generations and attract young Kashmiris who are unfamiliar with their native tongue.
The initial response has been overwhelming, he said.
"In just three days, 4,000 users signed up—far beyond our expectations," he said. However, further development requires funding and a dedicated team to enhance its capabilities, including the addition of a voice feature.
Currently in beta testing, KashmiriGPT aims to gather user feedback for improvements.
Yousuf envisions a fully customised AI model that comprehensively covers Kashmiri history and culture.
"Kashmir has a history spanning over 5,000 years, and no other place in India matches its rich heritage. This needs to be documented and shared," he emphasised.
Experts in language preservation have lauded Yousuf’s initiative as a pioneering effort in using AI for cultural conservation.
Asif Shafi, a student of Kashmiri language and literature, believes the tool will be highly beneficial for students and researchers.
At work, Yousuf fine-tunes responses and incorporates cultural references to enrich the AI’s knowledge base. "Every day, we lose more native speakers," he said. "But maybe, just maybe, we can use tomorrow’s technology to preserve yesterday’s voice...////...
