Motihari, June 23 (Reporter) A bridge being constructed at an expenditure of Rs 2 crore in Bihar's East Champaran district, has collapsed - the third such incident reported from the state in a week -official sources said on Sunday.

Executive Engineer of Rural Works Department (RWD) S N Mandal, posted in Dhaka, claimed that some anti-social elements had disturbed the centrings of the newly cast portion, leading to the collapse of the bridge. An FIR would be lodged against those who indulged in disruptions and sabotage, he added.
Meanwhile, locals alleged that substandard materials were used in the construction of the bridge which led to its collapse. They also pointed out that construction work was not being done as per estimate and alignment, finalised in technical assessment done for the purpose. The villagers demanded a high-level inquiry into the bridge giving way.
As it is, this is the third bridge that has given way within a week in Bihar. Earlier reports of bridge collapse came in from Araria and Siwan districts.
In Araria, a portion of a bridge being constructed at an expenditure of Rs 12 crore on the Bakra river collapsed on Tuesday whereas a bridge on Gandak river canal in Ramgarha Panchayat of Daraunda block in Siwan district caved in on Saturday.
