Brasilia, Aug 30 (Reporter) US entrepreneur Elon Musk's X social media service has said it refuses to comply with "illegal orders" from a court in Brazil and expects to be shut down in the country.
The G1 news portal reported Thursday that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes had ordered Musk to notify the court within 24 hours who will be X's new legal representative in Brazil, otherwise the social network would be suspended.
"Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents," X's Global Government Affairs team said on X.
It said the judge threatened X's Brazilian legal representative with imprisonment.
"When we attempted to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened our Brazilian legal representative with imprisonment. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts. Our challenges against his manifestly illegal actions were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes’ colleagues on the Supreme Court are either unwilling or unable to stand up to him," the team said.
The team added that it would not comply with "illegal orders."
"In the days to come, we will publish all of Judge de Moraes’ illegal demands and all related court filings in the interest of transparency. Unlike other social media and technology platforms, we will not comply in secret with illegal orders," it said.
Musk said later in the day that Starlink would continue to support the Brazilian armed forces despite the Brazilian court's decision to freeze its accounts.
"Starlink will continue to support the Brazilian military even though our bank accounts in Brazil have been illegally frozen by Judge De Voldemort," Musk wrote on X, adding that SpaceX will provide internet service to users in Brazil for free until the matter is resolved.
He added that many remote schools and hospitals rely on Starlink.
Brazilian media previously reported that Starlink accounts in Brazil had been frozen due to the lack of an X's legal representative. Musk has claimed that X and Starlink are legally separate entities.
Therefore, he argues that the Brazilian court's decision to freeze Starlink accounts is illegal...////...
