Wholesale inflation eases to 1.89 pc in November on softening food prices

New Delhi, Dec 16 (Reporter) Driven by softening in food prices, India's wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation eased to 1.89% year-on-year in November this year from 2.36% in the previous month. As per data released by Ministry of Commerce & Industry on Monday, the month over month change in WPI for the month of November, 2024 stood at (-) 0.06 % as compared to October, 2024. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 11.59% in October, 2024 to 8.92% in November, 2024. "The annual rate of inflation based on all India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) number is 1.89% (Provisional) for the month of November, 2024 (over November, 2023). Positive rate of inflation in November, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, food products, other manufacturing, textiles, machinery & equipment, etc," an official release said. The consumer price index (CPI) based inflation had also moderated in November 2024 as food prices cooled during the month, as per official data released last week. Commenting on November WPI numbers, Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CareEdge Ratings said, "The moderation in the WPI inflation was primarily on the account of a decline in food inflation. The arrival of fresh harvests has led to a seasonal correction in food prices. The outlook for agriculture remains positive, with good Kharif production. Prospects for Rabi sowing remain conducive with healthy reservoir levels and good soil moisture from prolonged monsoons."
