London/New Delhi, Mar 28 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was heckled by the audience while delivering a talk at Kellogg College, Oxford, with many raising slogans against her over the rape and murder of a lady doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital last year, which snowballed into a major political issue.
Many of the protesters among the audience were from the Students' Federation of India, United Kingdom chapter, and many others were Bengali diaspora members from the UK.
During the talk on Thursday, many members of the audience were seen holding placards against Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool government.
The SFI, UK Chapter, in posts on X said:
“SFI-UK held a demonstration in Kellogg College, Oxford against Mamata Banerjee's speech. We opposed her blatant lies by asking her for evidence of the social development she claims to pioneer.”
SFI said that instead of allowing the members to peacefully express their opinions, the police were called in.
“We questioned her on her statements of victim-blaming and lethargy against the RG Kar incident. When Mamata Banerjee claimed to support the students and democratic rights in Bengal, we asked her why the students have not been able to hold university elections for last 6 years
“We asked why students at Jadavpur University are being tormented and attacked for demanding their rights to student democracy. When Banerjee claimed to have advanced women's empowerment in the state, we asked why female school dropout rate has increased by 19% in the last year.
“We questioned @KelloggOx on its justifications for platforming a rape apologist, who has consistently put profits before people.
“In support of the students and working masses of West Bengal, SFI-UK raised its voice in opposition to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC's corrupt, undemocratic rule.”
Amit Malviya, BJP in-charge National Information & Technology Dept., Co-incharge West Bengal. Member National Executive, said in posts on X:
“Bengali Hindus confront West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kellogg College in London, raising angry slogans calling her out for the rape and murder of the lady doctor at RG Kar, crimes against women in Sandeshkhali, the genocide of Hindus, and widespread corruption
“The usually belligerent Mamata Banerjee, ensconced in the protection of the West Bengal Police, was a meek shadow of herself at Kellogg College when angry Hindu Bengalis confronted her with slogans condemning her for the genocide of Hindus and the numerous cases of rape and murder of women, including those at RG Kar and Sandeshkhali.
“Let the 2026 election in West Bengal be free and fair, and she will be voted out. The misuse of state machinery, particularly the police, who double up as TMC cadres, must be curtailed, and she will surrender like any weak dictator.”
At the Kellogg College talk, the West Bengal Chief Minister was in conversation with Kellogg College President Prof Jonathan Michie and Bynum Tudor Fellow at Kellogg, Lord Karan Bilimoria. The talk was attended by Saurabh Ganguly, former cricket captain.
One twitterati said: “We caught her lying and asked questions about investments in West Bengal, the names of investors, and that TATA's left West Bengal due to her bad industrial policies.
“2. The killing of our daughter Abhaya -A medical student at KAR Medical College
“3. Why is she not allocating land for fencing between West Bengal and Bangladesh?
“Youth from Scotland and many from London and other parts of the UK came to ask her many questions.
“She failed to reply and gave false answers, which resulted in a completely chaotic situation. The live feed of the conversation was suspended. Management called the police.”
Naomi Canton, the Times of India correspondent from London, said in a post on X:
“Breaking: There was major disruption at CM Mamata Banerjee's keynote speech at Kellogg College, Oxford today, which was meant to be the highlight of her UK trip. First she was heckled by Indian-origin people at the back and then a bunch of people, who looked like Bengali Indian students, stood up in a line and held up protest banners at the back. They shouted at her, in the middle of her speech. She answered them back, the audience joined in and it descended into a shouting match and total chaos.”
To loud protests about mishandling of the RG Kar case, Mamata Banerjee responded: “This matter is sub judice, this case is with the central government. Do not do politics here, this platform is not for politics. You are lying. Do not make it a political platform. You go to Bengal and tell your political party to become even stronger.”
Asked about her alleged patronage of members of the minority community, Mamata Banerjee said: “I support every religion. I support Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians. Do not name one caste, name everyone.”
