Srinagar, May 20 (Reporter) PDP leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday underscored that "war is the solution to nothing" as she noted that several civilians, including children, were killed during the recent military hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Observing that the inhabitants of frontier zones are the worst sufferers of an armed conflict, she said those who advocate for war should go and live in the border areas along with their families so that they understand by experience the consequences of fighting.
"War is solution to nothing....War is no solution, not even the last resort," Mehbooba Mufti said while addressing a press conference here.
Referring to the 4-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan earlier this month, she said, "In this war, we lost many people and especially children who had their whole lives ahead of them.... There have been a lot of civilian casualties on both sides.. We lost 28 people in Pahalgam (terror attack)."
She went on to add, "Those who advocate war should live on the borders of Tangdhar, R S Pora, or Poonch (in Jammu and Kashmir) with their wives and children. Only then will they understand what war truly means…. Those who advocate for war, I will tell them that take this war to your borders where you live.... There should be no war on our border."
Asked what benefits 'Operation Sindoor' had brought for the country, according to her assessment, the PDP leader said, "I don't know, but I can say that our homes have been destroyed. Our children have been martyred in this."
She went on to say, "In our homes, parents have made graves for their children in the courtyard. … A mother of two small children got shot in the head….I can only see that. I don't know what else has been achieved."
Mehbooba urged the government to provide at least Rs 50 lakh in compensation, and to formally recognize residents of border areas who have suffered total losses as victims of war.
“... People who lost their lives in the war should be declared martyrs. By doing so, they will get the respect that they deserve and also will get the benefits of it. Jobs should be provided to their family members,” she said.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India on the night of May 6-7 with hits at 9 major terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) to avenge the April 22 massacre of 26 tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam in Kashmir.
Turning to the Pahalgam attack, Mehbooba said the "militants or terrorists involved" (in the carnage) have not been caught yet, and there is no news about them yet."
She then claimed that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said that he had "already warned Pakistan".
"When you warn them, it means if you say that we have attacked terrorist camps, they will also get a chance to escape from there. I don't know. For me, it is zero to zero," the former J&K CM said.
The Ministry of External Affairs has already clarified that Jaishankar had meant that when Operation Sindoor was launched, Pakistan had been given a message that the targets were terror camps and not military installations, and hence the military should stay away.
Mehbooba said the Modi government should follow the doctrine of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to get answers to every question arising from the present situation.
The PDP leader, whose party ran a government in J&K in alliance with the BJP from 2015 to 2018, said that dissent and democratic questioning were being increasingly labelled as an anti-national act.
“Unfortunately, whenever you ask any question in today’s time, it is very quickly dressed as anti-national,” she said.
Emphasizing the distinction between the ruling party and the country, she said, “India is a great country. India is a nation, BJP is not a nation. Asking questions of the BJP or its government is not anti-national...////...
