New Delhi, Sep 12 (Reporter) CPI(M) General Secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury died at AIIMS on Thursday after prolonged illness.
He was 72 and is survived by his wife Seema Chisti Yechury and two children.
Yechury was admitted in the intensive care unit of AIIMS, Delhi and was being treated for acute respiratory tract infection.
Over the past few days, he had been on respiratory support, and being treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors.
He had been serving as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) since 2015.
Born on August 12, 1952 in Chennai, Yechury studied in Delhi University during graduation and completed post-graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
An alumnus of Delhi's St Stephen's College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Veteran CPI(M) leader started his political career with the Students' Federation of India and joined the party in 1975.
He was pursuing his doctorate in Economics from JNU when the Indira Gandhi government imposed the Emergency in 1975. Yechury was arrested along with many other leaders who later played a key role in National Politics. His PhD remained incomplete.
