Washington, Jan 14 (Reporter) A US delegation comprising former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, will travel to Taiwan on Sunday, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said.
The AIT serves as the United States' de facto representation in Taiwan.
"As we have done previously following a Taiwan presidential election, the U.S. government has asked former senior officials to travel in their private capacity to Taiwan. Former National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley and former Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg will arrive in Taipei on January 14," the AIT said in a statement.
The US delegation will meet with "a range of leading political figures" on the following day and convey congratulations from the American people to Taiwan on the election, the statement read.
On Saturday, the Taiwanese Central Election Commission named Lai Ching-te, the candidate from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the winner of the election of the island's head of state as he secured 40.05% of the vote.
