UN Chief says carbon budget will be exceeded by 2030 at current 'reckless speed'

United Nations, June 5 (Reporter) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that the carbon budget will be exceeded by 2030 if the world burns through it at the current "reckless speed." "The truth is, we are burning through the budget at reckless speed, spewing out around 40 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year," Guterres said during a special address on climate action. "At these rates, the entire carbon budget will be busted before 2030." Guterres explained that the difference between 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees Celsius could mean the difference between the extinction or survival of some small island states and coastal communities. "1.5 degrees [Celsius] is not a target. It's not a goal. It's a physical limit," Guterres said.
