Guyana, June 6 (Reporter) Uganda celebrated a historic win at the T20 World Cup on Thursday, defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) in a gripping, low-scoring match.
Bouncing back from a heavy defeat against Afghanistan in their opening game, Uganda showcased tenacity to outclass PNG, who had displayed commendable perseverance in their previous game against hosts West Indies.
The match remained tense throughout, with both teams at similar scores and six wickets down after 15 overs. Uganda, however, held their nerve in the final stages, while PNG faltered, culminating in Uganda’s maiden World Cup win.
PNG’s innings began poorly with their captain departing for a second-ball duck. Compounding the trouble, he wasted a review on an obvious decision. Despite hitting a few boundaries, PNG lost two more wickets quickly, ending the powerplay at 33/3.
The middle phase was no better for PNG, as they managed just one boundary and scored at a dismal rate of 2.55 runs per over. Frank Nsubuga's exceptional bowling, including two back-to-back wicket maidens, left PNG reeling.
Charles Amini’s counter-attack attempt ended with his stumps scattered, contributing to Nsubuga’s remarkable figures of 4-2-4-2, the most economical spell in T20 World Cup history.
In the final phase, PNG saw a brief glimmer of hope when Kiplin Doriga hit the first six of the innings. However, his dismissal, followed by a rapid fall of wickets, led to PNG being bowled out for 77 in 19.1 overs.
Uganda’s chase began shakily, losing three wickets for six runs in the first 13 balls. They managed to reach 25/4 by the end of the powerplay, helped by PNG’s wayward bowling.
At 26/5, PNG seemed poised for victory, but Riazat Ali Shah and Juma Miyagi steadied Uganda’s innings. Playing cautiously, they ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over without taking undue risks. Riazat, having survived a crucial chance, guided Uganda closer to the target.
Despite losing a wicket late in the innings, Uganda’s target was small enough to avoid panic. Regular singles brought the target down, and the game was won with 10 balls to spare, securing Uganda’s historic win.
Uganda will face the West Indies on Saturday at the same venue, while PNG will take a break before their match against Afghanistan in Trinidad on June 13.
