Washington, Apr 25 (Reporter) US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Time that Chinese President Xi Jinping had reached out to him to discuss trade, although he did not specify the timing of the call.
"He's called. And I don't think that's a sign of weakness on his behalf," Trump said in the interview marking his first 100 days in office.
Trump noted that, based on his conversation with Xi, he believes there is a tariff level that Beijing is willing to accept. However, he emphasized that he would not permit China to make a trillion dollars in trade with the United States, not even $750 billion.
On April 2, Trump signed an executive order introducing "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from other countries. Their basic rate was set at 10%, while higher rates were introduced against 57 countries and calculated based on the US trade deficit with a specific country: so that there would be a balance instead of a deficit.
However, on April 9, the US leader announced that more than 75 countries had not taken retaliatory measures and requested negotiations, so for 90 days, basic import duties of 10% would apply to everyone except China.
After a series of steps in the trade war, the additional "reciprocal" US tariff on Chinese goods reached 125%, and China's retaliatory tariff on American goods is also 125%.
