Washington, Aug 30 (Reporter) Former US President Donald Trump has sought to have his criminal case for falsifying records moved from a New York district court to the federal court, The New York Times reported on Friday.
In May, a jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying records related to payments made to two women, including the porn actress Stormy Daniels, in exchange for their silence about an alleged affair. He is scheduled to receive his punishment on September 18, just a month and a half before the presidential election on November 5.
"The ongoing proceedings will continue to cause direct and irreparable harm to President Trump — the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election — and voters located far beyond Manhattan," Trump's lawyers were quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The petition was reportedly filed as the Trump legal team awaited the outcome of an effort to delay sentencing. In mid-August, Trump asked the state judge to delay sentencing until after the election.
The maximum possible sentence for all the charges against Trump is 136 years of imprisonment. Trump has declared his innocence and said there was no reason to open a case against him.
