Chennai, Mar 11 (Reporter) After days of intense heat, the southern, coastal and delta districts are expected to receive heavy rains for the next two days under the influence of a Trough of Low over southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu. Met office on Tuesday said the trough over the coast extends up to 1.5 km. Under its influence, light to moderate rain is likely at many places over Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal areas with isolated heavy rain over south Tamil Nadu and delta districts. Isolated very heavy rain is also likely at isolated places over southern districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thootukudi and Tenkasi during the same period. Light to moderate rain is also likely at a few places with isolated heavy rain at one or two places over south Tamil Nadu tomorrow. Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal area. Meanwhile, the Chennai city which has started feeling the pinch of impending gruelling summer over the last few days, had a respite from the heat, thanks to sudden rains, which were quite heavy at times in short spells. After the blazing morning sun, the sky suddenly turned grey leading to heavy rains and the weather remained pleasant. Some of the areas were waterlogged due to the sudden showers, but did not cause any disruption in traffic. Met office said rainfall occurred at a few places over South Coastal Tamil Nadu and at one or two places over rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district received a maximum of three cms of rain during the last 24 hrs ending at 0830 hrs this morning. It said there was generally no large change in the maximum temperature during the past 24 hours with a falling tendency by 2-3 Deg C over Interior Tamil Nadu. The maximum temperatures were above normal by 2-3 Deg C at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and generally near normal over rest of the subdivision. They were in the range 34-37 deg C over the plains of Interior Tamil Nadu and in the range of 31-35 deg C over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. It said a trough of Low lies over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. The yesterday’s upper air Cyclonic Circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal at 1.5 km above mean sea level has become less marked. On the forecast for the next seven days, the Met office said light to moderate rain at many places with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. Heavy to very Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram districts and Karaikal area for the next two days. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over South Tamil Nadu; at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places. Heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area on March 13 and 17, while dry weather is likely to prevail over in these region for three days from March 14 to 16. It said thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. No large change in maximum temperature over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal with a falling tendency over Tamilnadu by 2-3 deg C at a few pockets during the next 2 days and thereafter gradual rise by 2-3 deg C during the subsequent three days. The forecast for Chennai and its neighbourhood is that light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur in some areas for the next 24 hrs. The maximum temperature would be around 33 deg C and the sky condition would be partly cloudy...////...
