Agartala, Feb 8 (Reporter) A first-track court in West Tripura on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to a middle-aged man convicted of killing his wife in May 2020 based on the testimonies of 18 witnesses, including his son.
Additional Public Prosecutor Arabindo Deb said, “The convict Goutam Chakraborty, on May 8, 2020, in the A D Nagar area of the city, attacked his wife, Anima Chakraborty, with a sharp weapon, leading to fatal injuries to the body following a family dispute.”
The accused fled from the scene, leaving his wife bleeding on the bed. Their son Nayan Chakraborty recovered the body the next morning and complained of a murder charge against his father, which led to the arrest of the convict, Deb stated.
The trial began in the fast-track court of the West District in November 2020. The defence counsel argued that Chakraborty was mentally unstable and acted under the influence of alcohol. He also claimed that there was no eyewitness or direct evidence to link him to the crime.
However, the court rejected the arguments advanced by the defence counsel and pronounced Chakraborty guilty of murder based on circumstantial and scientific evidence. The court observed that Chakraborty had a motive to kill his wife. The convict had a habit of suspecting his wife of having an extramarital affair with someone else, Deb apprised the court.
The scientific examinations found that the blood stains found at the crime scene and the murder weapon matched. The court awarded the maximum sentence of life imprisonment to Chakraborty, saying that he committed a brutal and heinous crime against his wife, who was his life partner and deserved his love and respect...////...
