Mumbai, Nov 22 (Reporter) The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, India’s premier domestic T20 tournament, is set to kick off on November 23, with the action running through to December 15.
As the countdown to the IPL 2025 season begins, this year’s edition promises to deliver top-tier cricket, as a host of high-profile IPL stars take part in the tournament, eager to fine-tune their skills and match fitness ahead of the upcoming season.
With 38 teams divided into five groups, the tournament will follow a round-robin format, where each team faces off against the others in its group. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage, along with the best second-placed team across all groups, based on points or Net Run Rate. This structure ensures a competitive and exciting tournament, with seasoned international stars and IPL regulars looking to make a strong impression.
Among the standout names in the 2024 edition is Hardik Pandya, who will captain Baroda alongside his brother Krunal Pandya. Baroda, the runners-up in last year’s tournament, will rely heavily on Hardik’s all-round abilities and Krunal’s left-arm spin and middle-order batting.
Bengal’s squad will also feature an exciting return, with pace spearhead Mohammed Shami making his comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. Shami’s leadership and experience will be crucial for Bengal’s challenge this season.
Gujarat, a strong contender, will see Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi in their ranks. Axar, an IPL regular and a key all-rounder for India and Delhi Capitals, will bolster the squad with his batting and spin bowling. Ravi Bishnoi, a talented leg-spinner, will provide another weapon in Gujarat’s bowling attack. Haryana, featuring IPL stars Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, and Mohit Sharma, will boast one of the strongest bowling line-ups, with Chahal’s leg-spin and Harshal’s expertise in death bowling adding depth to their squad.
Hyderabad’s hopes rest on the shoulders of young star Tilak Varma, who has impressed for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Known for his aggressive batting, Varma will look to lead his side’s charge. Kerala, captained by explosive batsman Sanju Samson, will aim to make an impact with Samson’s dynamic style, which has been a hallmark of his IPL career with Rajasthan Royals.
Jharkhand will be represented by wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, a powerful hitter who has made a name for himself in the IPL with Mumbai Indians. Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Maharashtra, will also be a key figure, bringing his consistent form from Chennai Super Kings to the domestic stage.
