Srinagar, May 27 (Reporter) In a symbolic move aimed at restoring confidence among tourists following last month’s terror attack, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will chair a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday at the popular tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Omar will also chair a meeting On Wednesday, in the ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir, with ministers, administrative secretaries, the divisional commissioner of Kashmir, department heads, and senior police officers.
According to government officials, the meeting in Pahalgam and Gulmarg is intended to send a strong message of safety and normalcy, and to encourage the revival of tourism in the Valley.
It will be the first time since the government’s formation last year that Omar-led cabinet meeting is being held outside the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu.
“The aim of the meeting is to show solidarity with the locals in Pahalgam and reassure tourists that Kashmir is a safe destination,” a senior government functionary said.
Tourist arrivals have seen a significant dip since the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, prompting concerns within the tourism sector.
This is not the first time Omar Abdullah has taken such a step. During his previous tenure as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2014, he had convened cabinet meetings close to the Line of Control in both Kashmir and Jammu regions, focusing on developmental issues in remote and border areas.
On Monday, the Chief Minister met a delegation from the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Srinagar, where he emphasized the need for targeted measures to revive the local tourism industry. These include promoting intra-state tourism and encouraging schools and colleges to organize excursions within Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar further stated that he had appealed to the Prime Minister and the Parliamentary Affairs Department to hold standing and consultative committee meetings of Parliament in Kashmir to boost visibility and instill confidence.
He also urged participants at a recent NITI Aayog conference to help facilitate PSU conferences, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events, and other national-level gatherings in the Valley...////...
