Thoothukudi, Mar 6 (Reporter) A special police team shot a history-sheeter, a key-accused in the brutal murder of a septuagenarian woman and her daughter in the leg, when he tried to escape by attacking a sub-inspector of police with a sickle at Vaippar River basin at Ayan Vadamalapuram in Thoothudi district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Police said P.Seethalakshmi (70), a widow, who was separated from her husband, and her daughter V.Ramajayanthi (48), was found murdered on last Monday and their golden ornaments weighing 13 sovereigns were missing from the house at Melanambipuram near Ettayapuram in Thoothudi district. The Ettayapuram police registered a murder-for-gain case and were probing the incident. Superintendent of police Albert John formed nine special police teams to investigate and arrest the culprits in the double murder case. Subsequently, the police arrested two persons, identified as Mukesh Kannan (25) and Velmurugan (18) involved in the double murder case, while the key-accused Muneeswaran (25) was absconding. Meanwhile, acting on a tip off that Muneeswaran was hiding in the forest area adjoining the Vaippar River basin, the special police team deployed drones to confirm his presence and tracked his movement. A police team, led by Muthuraja, sub-inspector of police (SI) attached to the Kulathur police station combed the area and cornered the accused. When the police asked him to surrender, he attacked Muthuraja with a sickle in a bid to escape forcing the SI to open fire in self defence. Muneeswaran suffered bullet injury on his right leg, while the SI sustained injury in the attack. Both the injured SI and Muneeswaran were admitted to Thoothukudi government medical college hospital for treatment.
