Tiruvarur (Tamil Nadu), Feb 24 (Reporter) The engine of a 12-wagon goods train transporting several tonnes of gravel for laying new railway tracks derailed near Tiruvarur railway station on Monday.
Railway officials said the engine of goods train-laden with gravel proceeding to Karaikal in Puducherry for the ongoing Karaikal-Peralam new broad gauge conversion project derailed shortly after departing from Tiruvarur railway station, this morning.
The engine went off the tracks before coming to a halt, disrupting train traffic on the route.
Senior railway officials, along with a technical team, rushed to the site and were attempting to re-rail the engine.
The 12 wagons of the derailed engine were moved away from the track with another engine in a bid to restore train traffic.
A detailed probe is underway by the Southern Railways to ascertain the cause of the derailment of the goods train engine...////...
