Tirupati, Jan 8 (Reporter) The issuance of tokens for devotional ‘Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam’ turned tragic as four people including three women were killed in a stampede here in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.
The stampede took place when the gate was opened for thousands of people, who were waiting to get a ‘Vaikunta Dwara Darshan’ ticket in the hill shrine Tirumala on the auspicious Ekadasi day on Friday.
Sources said that fourteen people were admitted to the Ruia hospital and they were undergoing treatment. They said the stampede took place at the Bairagipatteda area where thousands of people surged simultaneously after the gate was opened for giving the Vaikunta Dwara Darshan tokens.
Since the police and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) officials failed to make elaborate arrangements to regulate crowds, the stampede took place for about 20 minutes, some devotees told the media.
District Collector Venkateswarulu and SP Subba Rayudu visited the place and controlled the situation.
Three centres were opened to issue tokens at Srinivasam, Satyanarayanapuram and Bairagipatteda areas. The TTD officials announced that a total of 1.20 lakh tokens would be issued to devotees to have darshan of the Lord Venkateswara on January 10, 11 and 12.
Meanwhile, the officials identified two of the deceased as Mallika of Selam in Tamil Nadu and Naidu Babu of Narsipatnam town.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep shock at the demise of four pilgrims.
In a release here, the Chief Minister said he is deeply saddened at the ghastly incident.
The Chief Minister enquired from the officials about the treatment being given to those who sustained grievous injuries in the incident.
Naidu was closely monitoring the treatment being given to the injured and other developments. The Chief Minister also directed the officials to visit the place and take all possible steps to provide relief to the devotees besides ensuring better medical treatment to the injured...////...
