Dhaka, Aug 5 (Reporter) Thousands of protesters on Monday stormed Ganobhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister, after receiving news that Sheikh Hasina has left the country on a military helicopter.
PM Sheikh Hasina departed Dhaka at around 2:30pm on Monday on a military helicopter, accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana for a "safer place".
According to sources, they were heading to West Bengal, India.
Sheikh Hasina had intended to record a speech before her departure but did not get the opportunity to do so.
Meanwhile, a meeting is underway at the army headquarters with leaders of various political parties and prominent individuals on Monday.
It has been learned that Professor Asif Nazrul from the Law Department of Dhaka University has been invited to this meeting with the Army Chief, General Wakar-Uz-Zaman, Dhaka Tribune reported.
Senior Co-Chairman of the Jatiya Party, Anisul Islam Mahmud, and the party’s Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, are also invited to the meeting.
This meeting is currently underway at the army headquarters.
Army Chief General Wakar-Uz-Zaman is set to address the nation shortly.
Student activists had called for a march to the capital Dhaka on Monday in defiance of a nationwide curfew to press PM Hasina to resign, a day after deadly clashes across the country killed nearly 100 people.
As protesters began to march in some places, armoured personnel carriers and troops patrolled the streets of the capital. There was little civilian traffic, barring a few motorcycles and three-wheel taxis.
At least six people were killed in clashes between police and protesters in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas on Monday, the Daily Star reported.
Police hurled sound grenades in some parts of the city to disperse small groups of protesters...////...
