Telangana Govt enhances retirement benefits for Anganwadi staff

Hyderabad, May 29 (Reporter) In a significant move, the Telangana government has approved enhanced retirement benefits for Anganwadi teachers and helpers across the state. The Finance Department has cleared a proposal from the Women and Child Welfare Department, paving the way for the issuance of a Government Order (GO) to implement the revised benefits. As per the new provisions, Anganwadi teachers who retire will receive Rs 2 lakh, while helpers will receive Rs 1 lakh as retirement benefits. This is a substantial increase from the existing benefits of Rs 1 lakh for teachers and Rs 50,000 for helpers. Currently, Telangana has over 37,580 Anganwadi centres, with approximately 70,000 staff members—one teacher and one helper at each centre. On average, around 7,000 employees retire each year. The retirement age for Anganwadi workers is 65 years. Fulfilling an electoral promise, the state government—referred to as the "Praja government"—has doubled the retirement benefits, offering greater financial security to thousands of families dependent on these workers. Although the proposal had been pending due to technical reasons, progress was made after Women and Child Welfare Minister Dr Danasari Anasuya Seethakka met with Finance Minister Batti Vikramarka to discuss the matter. Following their discussions, the Finance Department granted the necessary approval. The formal order is expected to be issued soon, an official statement said on Thursday.
