Telangana: death toll in blast at chemical rises to 38

Hyderabad, July 1 (Reporter) The death toll in the massive explosion at a 3-storey chemical plant in Sangareddy in the outskirts of the city climbed to 38 on Tuesday and 43 workers are still missing. Of the 38 deaths, many bodies were burnt beyond recognition and only nine bodies have been identified so far, according to officials here. A few of them are still undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Patancheru. "More people could be trapped under the debris. Once the rubble is cleared, we will have a clear picture," said a fire official. The early morning blast at the Sigachi Industries facility in the Pashamylaram industrial area reduced the multi-storey building to rubble. Health authorities dispatched forensic doctors to the area hospital to identify the bodies with DNA analysis. Rescue operations are ongoing and officials fear the toll may rise further as teams continue to remove the rubble in search of those possibly trapped in the 3-floor collapsed building. The workers at the plant hail from various states including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, UP and West Bengal. Nearly 200 personnel from fire services, SDRF and NDRF teams are conducting rescue operations at the incident site. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will visit the hospital and meet victims’ families on Tuesday.
