Hyderabad, May 8 (Reporter) In the wake of the Central Government’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Wednesday held an emergency review meeting with senior officials from all departments to assess and enhance the state’s preparedness for any emergency situation.
The meeting led to the initiation of ‘Operation Abhyas’ — a large-scale civil mock drill conducted across Hyderabad to raise public awareness and test inter-departmental coordination during crises such as air strikes.
Director General and Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, C V Anand, informed the media that a nationwide alert had been issued by the Union Home Ministry via video conference, advising states to conduct mock drills to mentally and physically prepare citizens for potential war-like situations.
Acting on these directives, the Telangana Government selected four locations — Golconda, Kanchanbagh, Secunderabad, and NFC — for conducting the mock drills.
The exercise began at 1600 hours with war sirens sounding across the city for the first time in nearly 55 years. The sirens were followed by emergency instructions from the Command Control Centre, advising citizens to seek shelter — those indoors were asked to remain inside, while people outside were directed to move into buildings or safe zones.
Those in vehicles were advised to stop and move to nearby shelters. Fifteen minutes later, a second siren was sounded, simulating an air strike in the four designated areas, triggering the full-scale deployment of emergency services.
Officials from the NDRF, SDRF, Revenue, GHMC, Police, Fire, Medical, Electricity, and Transport departments participated in the mock drill. The injured were simulated and shifted to hospitals, fires were “extinguished,” and traffic police ensured swift movement for emergency services. Senior officers, including Ravi Gupta (Principal Secretary, Home),. Nagi Reddy (DG, Fire Services), Vikram Singh Mann (Addl. CP, Law & Order), B. Kamalasan Reddy (ICCC In-charge), and Ms . Pushpa (DCP, ICCC), directly monitored operations from the Command Control Center.
CM Revanth Reddy instructed that all government officials cancel leave and report to duty. He emphasised the need to combat misinformation on social media, increase security near sensitive locations and embassies, and conduct periodic departmental reviews. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that all emergency equipment, especially that of NDRF, is in proper working condition.
In a show of solidarity with the armed forces, the Chief Minister announced that a rally would be held from the Secretariat to Necklace Road at 1800 hours on Thursday.
The event will see participation from the CM, Deputy CM, and other dignitaries, along with coordination from the Health, Transport, GHMC, and Police departments.
C V Anand reassured citizens that the mock drills are purely precautionary and aimed at strengthening public and institutional response capabilities.
He added that departments would continue to evaluate the drills and address any shortcomings to ensure better preparedness in the future...////...
