Dhaka, Mar 24 (Reporter) Bangladesh cricket was left stunned as former captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a heart attack mid-match during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League game in Savar.
The veteran opener had to be rushed to hospital, where an emergency angioplasty was performed to clear arterial blockages.
The incident unfolded dramatically as Tamim, who was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club, fielded for just one over before experiencing chest discomfort. Match referee Debabrata Paul confirmed that he left the field and proceeded to the KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home (formerly Fazilatunnesa Hospital) for medical consultation.
Following initial medical advice, Tamim returned to the ground intending to board an air ambulance to another hospital. However, his condition worsened, forcing him to be taken back to the original hospital in critical condition. Medical examinations confirmed arterial blockages, necessitating immediate intervention.
"He was in good spirits during the toss," Montu Dutta, chief cricket coach at BKSP, told reporters. "When he felt unwell, he left the field and drove himself to the hospital. The doctors initially advised him against leaving, but he insisted and was making arrangements for an air ambulance."
A medical bulletin later confirmed the severity of his condition. "He returned to us in a critical state. It was a heart attack, and we performed an angiogram and angioplasty to remove the blockage. The procedure was successful, and he is currently under observation. Quick coordination between the BKSP medical staff and the hospital ensured he received timely treatment," the statement read.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reacted swiftly to the development, cancelling a scheduled board meeting. BCB President Faruque Ahmed, along with other board members, is present at the hospital to monitor Tamim’s condition...////...
