Shimla, May 21 (Reporter) Cyclists Jaspreet Paul and Kshitij Thakur reached Tashigang, the world’s highest polling station, to encourage every voter to participate in the June 1 Lok Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh.
Covering 450 km from Shimla to Tashigang was not easy but the cyclists loved their mission as part of the SVEEP (Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation) activity.
Starting May 14, Paul and Thakur reached the final leg just days back. Starting from Kaza Circuit House in the last leg they covered the villages of Samudo, Hurling, Lari, Tabo, Poh, Shichling, Shego, Kaza, Langcha, Komik, and Hikkim, culminating in Tashigang.
Paul pledged to return to Tashigang if 100 percent voter turnout was achieved.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Spiti, Rahul Jain, flagged off the final stretch of the expedition as the chief guest. Jain marking his first visit to Spiti, emphasised the goal of achieving close to 80 percent voter turnout.
Upon reaching School Rangrik, the cyclists were warmly welcomed by school children and locals.
At around 4 pm Monday, the cyclists arrived in Tashigang, where they were greeted by residents of Tashigang and Gete village, along with the lamas of Keh Buddhist Monastery.
The students of Munseling School Rangrik performed a colourful cultural programme, and the Election Commission distributed special invitation letters to the voters.
Paul urged schoolchildren to encourage their families to vote on June 1. The schoolchildren formed a human chain to honour the cyclists for the last part of their journey from Rangrik to Tashigang.
With only 62 registered voters, Tashigang, assured that they will achieve a 100 percent turnout once again, maintaining their reputation as a prominent polling station that attracts numerous tourists every year...////...
