Kolkata, July 11 (Reporter) Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari today demanded removal of Prof Nirmal Majhi in a controversial question paper tagging freedom fighters as terrorists or 'santrasbadi' in the Vidyasagar University examination in Medinipur district of West Bengal. Adhikari described it as an institutional failure on the part of the authorities. Adhikari, who hails from Medinpur, described it as "absolutely outrageous" and called it a nexus of TMC as Majhi, an associate professor and head of history department is also the joint secretary of ruling party-affiliated WBCUPA, a platform of professors. "Absolutely outrageous The administrative authorities of Vidyasagar University have once again insulted our revered freedom fighters by labeling the brave revolutionaries of Medinipur as militants and terrorists," the Nandigram MLA said on X. He said the 2025 history honours 6th semester question paper sought answer of three district magistrates of Medinipur, who were killed by 'santrasbadi' in the 1930s. "This is not an isolated mistake but a deliberate distortion of our history, repeating the same disgraceful error from 2023 under the watch of Dr Nirmal Kumar Mahato, head of the history department and a known TMC affiliate in WBCUPA (West Bengal College and University Professors Association); TMC’s political organization comprising professors," Adhikari pointed out. It was shocking that no action has been taken against Dr Mahato despite his repeated oversight failures. "Worse still, his stature has risen, he was promoted to joint secretary of WBCUPA after the 2023 blunder," said Adhikari. Elaboraing on the freedom struggle, Adhikari said aganist the tyrannical British district magistrates; Burge (1933), Peddie (1931), and Douglas (1932) were targeted by Indian freedom fighters. Peddie was killed by Bimal Dasgupta and Jyotijiban Ghosh. Douglas was assassinated by Prabhanshusekhar Pal, accompanied by Pradyotkumar Bhattacharya. Burge was killed by Anathbandhu Panja, Mrigendranath Datta, Ramkrishna Roy, Nirmaljiban Ghosh, Brajakishore Chakraborty, and others. In the trials, Pradyot, Ramkrishna, Nirmaljiban, and Brajakishore were sentenced to death by hanging. Bimal, Jyotijiban, and Prabhanshu received prison sentences. During the attack on Burge, Anathbandhu was martyred on the spot by police gunfire, and Mrigendranath succumbed to his injuries the next day while under treatment. "Notably, the tombs of these three oppressive magistrates still stand in the churchyard at Sekhpura, serving as a reminder of the history of the independence movement. "On the other hand, statues of these freedom fighters have been erected in Midnapore city and various other regions, and they are remembered with reverence even today," the BJP leader said. "Is political elevation of Dr Nirmal Kumar Mahato an endorsement of TMC's belief that our freedom fighters were militants and terrorists? he asked. He also said the vice chancellor's refusal to act only deepens the suspicion of political protectionism. "This is a blow to every Indian who honours our independence struggle", Adhikari said and demanded immediate accountability and removal of Dr Mahato.
