New Delhi, Nov 27 (Reporter) Renowned Insolvency lawyer Sumant Batra has been honoured with the Global Restructuring Review (GRR) Award 2024 at a distinguished ceremony held in London on November 21. The GRR Awards, presented annually, celebrate exceptional achievements in cross-border restructuring and insolvency law. GRR is this domain's most widely read daily online news platform and magazine. Sumant Batra's recognition marks a significant milestone for India, highlighting his global eminence in insolvency law. India's association with the GRR Awards dates back to 2018, when the country was recognised as the "Most Improved Jurisdiction" at a glittering ceremony in White Hall, London. This honour acknowledges the transformative strides made under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC). At the time, the award was later ceremonially presented in India to Justice M.M. Kumar (then President, NCLT), Dr. M.S. Sahoo (then Chairperson, IBBI), and G.K. Singh (then Joint Secretary, MCA). The citation noted India's pioneering efforts in testing the IBC framework through landmark judgements, positioning the country as a global leader in insolvency reforms. Sumant Batra has made unparalleled contributions to insolvency policy, law, and practice in India and globally. A Distinguished Fellow of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (a government think tank) and Visiting Professor at National Law University, Delhi, Batra is the only Indian to hold the prestigious title of International Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. His leadership roles include INSOL International: As Past President, he remains the youngest and only Asian to have held this position in the organisation’s 43-year history. He spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives, including the Africa Roundtable and MENA programs, and expanded INSOL’s membership to uncharted territories. He has been the Founding Secretary of INSOL India since 1996 and was instrumental in its reinvention after the IBC enactment in 2016, making it one of the most dynamic global member associations. In the domain of Advisory and Reforms, Batra has served on key global committees of the IMF, OECD, World Bank Group, and Asian Development Bank. His work spans over 20 jurisdictions in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. He has authored various books. His publications include-‘Corporate Insolvency Principles and Practice (2017)’ A seminal work on insolvency law. The Jaypee Infra Insolvency Saga (2024): Chronicles India’s most complex insolvency case, underscoring the resilience of the IBC. His recent book, Mediation in Insolvency: A Game Changer for Viksit Bharat (2024): Co-edited with Justice A.K. Sikri, former Supreme Court judge will be launched on Wednesday, November 27 at the Delhi High Court Auditorium. While accepting the GRR Award, Batra credited his success to the late Arun Jaitley, former Finance Minister of India, for inspiring him to pursue insolvency law. He also acknowledged the mentorship of Senior Counsel Jawahar Lal Gupta. He owes his success to Neil Cooper, Past President of INSOL International, Dr. Bibek Debroy, eminent economist and Chair of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, Justice A.K. Sikri, former Supreme Court judge and International judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court, who Batra regards as an elder brother and with whom he has co-authored the book which will be launched today. Revered as the "Grandfather of Insolvency Reforms" in India, Batra has been a trusted advisor in almost all major insolvency cases since 2016, including high-profile cross-border matters.
