Stock market ends flat; fails to keep up initial gains

Mumbai, Aug 19 (Reporter) The benchmark indices ended flat on Monday as the market failed to keep up the initial gains due to profit booking in several counters. The BSE Sensex was down over 12 points at 80,424.68 while the NSE Nifty ended 31.50 points up at 24,572.70. The equity market remained calm throughout the session, and no high volatility was seen, as the Sensex advanced 244 points to open at 80,680.25, the day's high. Soon, it slipped nearly 104 points at 80,332.65, a day low, before closing at 80,424.68, easing 12.16 points from its previous close. It was a mixed performance across sectors with metals, energy and IT showing gains while the auto and banking lagged behind. In the last trading session, the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) had bought equities in the cash segment worth Rs 766 crore and the Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) had also bought to the tune of Rs 2606 crore, according to data available. Oil and Gas stock were in focus due to lowering on windfall tax on the oil marketing companies, however banking and auto stocks were major losers in today’s session. The Mid-cap and the small-cap indices rose by 0.53 percent and 1.33 percent respectively. In 30-scrip BSE Sensex shares of 18 companies advanced ending in green from their previous close while of 12 companies declined. The losers were M& M by 2.55 per cent to Rs 2768.15, IndusInd Bank by 1.13 per cent to Rs 1350, Bharti Airtel by 1.02 per cent to Rs 1469.35 and Tata Motors by 0.89 per cent to Rs 1089. The gainers were Tata Steel by 2.94 per cent to Rs 153.95, TCS by 1.62 per cent to Rs 4488.15, NTPC by 1.46 per cent to Rs 403.95, and JSW Steel by 1.16 per cent to Rs 918.50...////...
