Sri Lankan President presents poll manifesto promising to boost economy

Colombo, Aug 29 (Reporter) Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday released his election manifesto, which includes plans to lower the cost of living, generate employment and raise incomes, reduce indirect taxes, and increase welfare, according to Sri Lankan media reports. Politicians, celebrities, and other invited visitors attended the manifesto's introduction at a plush hotel here. "This election represents a choice between a peaceful and successful future for Sri Lanka and a return to chaos and uncertainty for all families. I understand Sri Lankans are struggling. However, we have already made significant progress on our path to wealth," said Wickremesinghe on the occasion. He said the country is on track to recover from the upheaval of 2022, and what was needed now was a plan for the next five years. "With your vote, I will shepherd a united Sri Lanka towards a prosperous and stable future," he said. The president said his aim is to eliminate taxes on necessities and increase the availability of local produce while importing items from other countries. New work opportunities will be developed, broadening the labour market. Furthermore, new income-generating opportunities will be created. He said in the coming years, professionals will be provided tax-free service incentives. "Many individuals suffer as a result of indirect taxes; we will take steps to eliminate them on a systematic basis," he said...////...
