Galle, Sep 22 (Reporter) The first Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand has reached a thrilling climax, with the home side just two wickets away from securing a win by the close of play on Sunday’s penultimate day.
New Zealand ended the day at 207 for 8, still needing 68 runs to reach the target of 275. With the pitch proving advantageous for spinners, Sri Lanka is poised to conclude the match on Monday.
Top-order batsman Rachin Ravindra is leading New Zealand's resistance, remaining unbeaten on 91 at stumps. If he reaches a century, he would become the first New Zealander to achieve this milestone in Galle.
Ravindra displayed a tactical approach, effectively using both conventional and reverse sweeps to find scoring opportunities. He notably capitalized on a loose delivery from part-time spinner Dhananjaya de Silva, dispatching a full toss for six.
Chasing 275 was always going to be a formidable task for the visitors, with Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya making significant inroads. He claimed the pivotal wicket of Kane Williamson, enticing the experienced batsman out of his crease before spinning the ball slightly away, leading to a sharp stumping by Kusal Mendis.
Ravindra found support from wicketkeeper Tom Blundell, and the pair added 56 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Jayasuriya struck again, bowling Blundell with a brilliant delivery. He soon dismissed Glenn Phillips, who was looking dangerous, caught at second slip.
After play was halted on Saturday due to Sri Lanka's presidential election, the home side resumed their innings at 237 for 4, with Angelo Mathews contributing a half-century to extend their lead past 250.
The day’s bowling honors went to New Zealand’s left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who took 6 for 90, while fast bowler William O’Rourke added to his five-wicket haul from the first innings, finishing the match with eight wickets.
As Sri Lanka aims to clinch the final two wickets quickly on the fifth morning, New Zealand will cling to their hopes with Ravindra still at the crease...////...
