New Delhi, July 21 (Reporter) South Asian University (SAU) is set to launch an Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, Green Transition, and Sustainability at its Maidan Garhi campus in south Delhi, university president Prof. K K Aggarwal announced here on Sunday. “The South Asian region's fragile ecosystem necessitates a dedicated interdisciplinary centre to address issues such as climate change, energy transition, and sustainability,” informed Prof. Aggarwal. The centre aims to develop effective adaptation strategies, tools, skills, and collaborative interventions involving a variety of stakeholders, he said. Prof. Aggarwal emphasized the centre's role as a hub for knowledge networks, bringing together academics, policymakers, practitioners, thought leaders, and changemakers. “We are planning to set up such centres in the field of AI, landslides, cyclones, fisheries, etc. for the larger benefit of students of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries,” Prof. Aggarwal added. The inaugural meeting for the centre was chaired by Prof. Aggarwal and attended by academicians, policy practitioners, and entrepreneurs. He highlighted the university's vision as a cutting-edge academic, research, and technological hub aimed at fostering shared prosperity and promoting harmony. “The proposed centre is one step forward in that direction,” he said, adding that educational and research institutions have a responsibility to find innovative solutions to the challenges posed by climate change. Ambassador Anup K. Mudgal, former India High Commissioner to Mauritius, underlined the imminent risk posed by climate change and the need for the Global South to question solutions that do not address their specific challenges. “Solutions cannot stand in silos. The Global South has to build its own capacity and find the right answers to difficult questions concerning climate change and sustainability,” he stated. Prof. Pooran Chandra Pandey, the chair of the centre’s committee, provided a detailed presentation on the proposed centre, covering its operational model, funding patterns, activities, and initiatives. He also shared why the university is an ideal location for the centre.
