Mumbai, May 15 (Reporter) Explosive opener Shafali Verma on Thursday made a much-anticipated comeback to the Indian women’s cricket team with her inclusion in both the T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming England tour, starting June 28.
After being dropped from the ODI side amid personal challenges, including a family health crisis, Shafali has returned to form with impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), cementing her place once again at the top of India’s batting order.
Shafali was the highest run-scorer for India during the 2021 England tour, amassing 159 runs across two innings in the one-off Test match. She scored 96 runs in the first innings and 63 in the second, becoming the youngest woman and fourth overall to score twin half-centuries in her debut Test. Her aggressive style and consistent scoring make her a key player as India prepare for a white-ball series comprising five T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals in England from June 28 to July 22.
The T20I leg will begin at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, followed by fixtures at Bristol, London’s Kennington Oval, Old Trafford in Manchester, and Edgbaston in Birmingham. The ODIs will be held at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, Lord’s Cricket Ground, London, and the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the team in both formats with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy. The squads also feature established players like Jemimah Rodrigues, wicketkeepers Richa Ghosh and Yastika Bhatia, and all-rounders Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana. The ODI squad is further bolstered by the inclusion of Pratika Rawal and Tejal Hasabnis, adding depth and balance.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), through Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia, officially released the schedule, emphasising the tour’s importance in providing crucial overseas exposure and strengthening the team ahead of upcoming ICC tournaments.
