Chennai, Dec 28 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, who is also the Chancellor of
the State-run Anna University, on Saturday visited the prestigious Institution and
reviewed the security arity arrangement following the alleged sexual assault on a girl
student in the campus.
Police have arrested a roadside biriyani vendor Gnansekaran (39) soon after the incident.
He had been frequenting the premises regularly and was said to be moving freely inside
the campus for nearly ten years as his wife was said to be a part time worker in the
sprawling University campus.
As the sexual assault incident sparked a row and created an outrage, with various students
organisations, college students in Chennai and other districts, besides Opposition parties
like AIADMK and BJP staging agitations strongly condemning the incident, the Governor
visited the campus today and reviewed the security measures put in place for the safety
of the students.
Taking a serious note, the Madras High Court too had taken suo motu cognizance of
the incident and ordered a SIT probe into the incident and compensation to the victim
who identity was said to have been revealed in the FIR.
During his visit Mr Ravi visited the spot where the alleged incident took place on
the night of Christmas eve.
The girl, a second year engineering student, was talking with her boy freind, when two
men approached her and threatened them.
According to reports, while one of them beat up her friend, another person subjected her
to sexual harassment resulting in the arrest of one person.
After conducting a thorough review of the security arrangements in the campus, the Governor
held discussions with the Registrar and other faculty members on the need to tighten the
security further to ensure a safe and secure environment for the students on the campus
and prevent such incidents in future.
Meanwhile, all the entry points to the University was deployed with additional security
personnel and those with valid ID card alone was allowed entry into the premises.
The Internal Complaints Committee of the University and POSH (Prevention of Sexual
Harassment) members are also inquiring into the incident and the University has formed
a Committee to suggest any changes in the functioning of hostel, fixing a time frame for
the students to return back to hostel, in the event of venturing out, and other measures,
besides installation of additional CCTV cameras as part of strengthening the security
