Gaza/Jerusalem, Jan 26 (Reporter) Israeli tanks are targeting Al-Amal Hospital and Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, resulting in several injuries, the Gaza-based Health Ministry said in a statement on Friday. "The hospitals have been besieged with heavy gunfire. Our teams are unable to reach the injured people," said the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Al Jazeera TV news reported snipers near the hospital shooting people attempting to leave the buildings. Meanwhile, Israel's military denied on Friday the reports. In a statement sent to Xinhua, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were in telephone contact with the medical staff of Al-Amal and Nasser hospitals in Khan Younis to ensure their continued operation. "The IDF communicated that there is no obligation to evacuate the hospitals," the army said, adding that troops were operating against Hamas militants in Khan Younis, the largest city in the southern Gaza Strip. "IDF intelligence indicates that Hamas are operating from inside and around Nasser Hospital and Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Yunis," it said. Khan Younis has witnessed during the past days the intensification of Israeli attacks, the fiercest since the Hamas-Israel conflict started last October. The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 26,083 since Oct. 7, 2023, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said on Friday. The Israeli army killed 183 Palestinians and wounded 377 others over the past 24 hours, the ministry said in a press statement.
