Seven EU nations call on Venezuela to make presidential election tally sheets public

Brussels, Aug 4 (Reporter) Spain, Italy, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal have called on Venezuela to make public all protocols from polling stations to ensure the transparency of voting in the presidential election held in the country last week. The countries' joint statement, published on Saturday, expressed concern regarding the situation in Venezuela after the past presidential election. "We call on Venezuelan authorities to release promptly all the tally sheets [from polling stations] in order to guarantee the full transparency and integrity of the electoral process ... This verification is essential for recognising the will of the Venezuelan people," the statement read. A presidential election in Venezuela was held on July 28. The next day the National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro, who secured over 51% of the vote, the winner. The Venezuelan opposition claims a landslide victory in the election, citing tally sheets they obtained from polling centers nationwide. Mass opposition protests sparked in Venezuela, with over 2,000 people detained. They are accused of destruction of state infrastructure, incitement of hatred and terrorism...////...
