SC tells Haryana, Punjab officials to partially open Shambhu border

New Delhi, Aug 12 (Reporter) The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Director Generals of Police of Punjab and Haryana and Patiala and Ambala districts’ Deputy Commissioners to hold a meeting within one week to lay down the modalities for partial opening of the Shambhu border for smooth passage of ambulances, senior citizens, women and students. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, while hearing the plea of Haryana government against the directions passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to remove blockade at the Shambhu Border, praised both the states for the efforts taken in proposing names of neutral persons who could be included in a committee for talks with farmers, who have been camping near the border post. Earlier the High Court had directed the Haryana government to remove the barriers at the Shambhu border, which was closed in February this year to prevent the movement of protesting farmers from Punjab to Haryana and Delhi. The state government had challenged the HC order in the top court. The bench said that if both the sides are able to resolve such modalities, they need not wait for any order from this court and let such resolution be directed immediately. After taking note of the names which Advocate General Gurminder Singh had submitted before the court, the bench said that it would pass a detailed order on the next date regarding the composition of the committee and its mandate.
