SC Grants protection to journalist accused of posting defamatory tweets

New Delhi, Dec 2 (Reporter) The Supreme Court on Monday granted protection to Mamta Tripathi, a journalist seeking the quashing of a case against her over an alleged defamatory video report in the newspaper Dainik Bhaskar. A bench comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice SVN Bhatti, while granting bail to Tripathi, directed the state of Uttar Pradesh not to arrest her till further orders. Additional Advocate General (AAG) Garima Prashad (for UP) told the court that they had not informed the apex judiciary that they had initially moved the Allahabad High Court in September for quashing of the case which was rejected and thereafter they moved this court u/a 32 and got interim protection in another case. They are hiding things, the AAG said. Senior Advocate Sidharth Dave appearing for Tripathi said, “Milords, please see the provision of section 420 IPC is just added to harass me". "Every time a tweet happens, an FIR is registered against me. Even Dainik Bhaskar in their statement had said that this report was correct.” “This is a complete harassment against a journalist in UP. Every time I post a tweet, an FIR is filed against me. This is absolute harassment. Please protect me, Dave said. The court issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government and asked them not to arrest Tripathi till the outcome of the case. The matter was posted after two weeks...////...
