SC extends broadcast nod to Kannada news channel awaiting licence renewal

New Delhi, July 15 (Reporter) The Supreme Court on Monday extended by a week its interim order staying Karnataka High Court's direction restraining Kannada news channel Power TV from broadcasting. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud extended the interim stay and allowed the Kannada News channel to carry on its services till July 22, the next date of hearing. The channel had allegedly broadcast news related to recent sex scandal allegations involving JD(S) leaders Prajwal Revanna and others. The Chief Justice asked Advocate Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Centre, “Tell us in last 3 years which were such channels that had applied for renewal but were not allowed to continue pending the decision of renewal?” Banerjee replied that a show cause notice was issued to Power TV to renew their licence but they did not come. The CJI asked, “Can they be shut down then... tell us this?” The court then posted the matter for next hearing on Monday. Earlier on July 12, the Supreme Court had stayed the June 26 order of the Karnataka High Court by which it had stayed the operation of the TV channel on the request of the Central government that the licence was not renewed. The Channel said that their application for the renewal of licence is pending with the authorities and yet the licence was cancelled. The Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India had observed that the channel was closed down due to political vendetta.
