New Delhi, Jun 2 (Reporter) The Supreme Court today agreed to urgently list a plea filed by two journalists who alleged they were assaulted by Madhya Pradesh police officials in retaliation for their reporting on illegal sand mining activities, often referred to as the 'sand mafia'. The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, who questioned why the petitioners had not approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court for relief. "Should we entertain all-India anticipatory bail matters only because a journalist is involved?" Justice Sharma asked during the hearing. According to the petitioners, the incident took place in May in Bhind district, where journalists were allegedly beaten inside the office of the Superintendent of Police. The counsel representing the journalists submitted that the duo is facing threats to their lives and is at risk of arrest in "false and fabricated" cases. “It’s very serious… they were beaten in a police station… They have now rushed to Delhi to seek refuge,” she said. Citing financial constraints and lack of safety, the counsel explained why the petitioners had bypassed the Madhya Pradesh High Court and approached the apex court directly. “This is really one of those cases… they don’t have the wherewithal,” she told the bench. The counsel also informed the court that the Press Club of India had condemned the alleged assault, emphasising the seriousness of the threat to the journalists’ lives. Despite their reservations, the bench agreed to urgently list the matter, though it signaled skepticism about the outcome. “You are running a risk,” Justice Sharma warned, while Justice Karol added, “We are telling you, if it comes before this bench, you know the conclusion.” The Counsel however requested the court to take up the matter urgently, to which the Apex Court agreed...////...
