Russian FM says Armenia distancing itself from CSTO ahead of Astana summit

Moscow, Nov 16 (Reporter) Armenia appears to be distancing itself from all activities of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Pankin said on Saturday, when asked at a briefing if Yerevan should be expected to attend the upcoming CSTO summit in Kazakhstan's Astana. "Ask the Armenian side about this. However, judging by the statements made by Armenia, it is currently distancing itself from participating in any format of CSTO activities at all levels," Pankin told reporters. The CSTO Council of foreign and defense ministers and security council chiefs will take place in Kazakhstan's Astana on November 28, preceding the CSTO summit. At the moment, Kazakhstan is the CSTO presiding country. The CSTO is a regional security alliance consisting of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. Armenia suspended its participation in the CSTO in February, with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan threatening to pull the country out of the bloc unless it addressed Yerevan's security concerns.
