Moscow/Kiev, May 26 (Reporter) Russia unleashed a record-breaking drone assault on Ukraine overnight Sunday into Monday, launching 355 drones and nine cruise missiles in what Ukrainian officials are calling one of the most intense air attacks of the war.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, 233 of the drones were destroyed, while 55 were either jammed or vanished from radar. The remaining drones and missiles struck multiple targets across Ukraine, damaging infrastructure and injuring civilians, reports The Guardian.
The onslaught also included nine Kh-101 cruise missiles, all of which were successfully intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses. Yet the sheer volume of attacks—targeting factories, residential areas, and critical infrastructure—left a visible trail of destruction. A teenager was injured in Odesa, and other Russian strikes elsewhere killed four civilians and injured at least 17 more, according to local officials and Ukraine’s Emergency Service.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed it had downed 110 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 13 over the Moscow region, in what appears to be a tit-for-tat intensification of drone warfare.
Ukrainian air defenses, which employed fighter aircraft, missile systems, mobile fire groups, and electronic countermeasures, faced an unprecedented test. Officials admitted that more than 60 drones may have bypassed defensive systems, reflecting a lower interception rate than in previous attacks—an alarming development as Russia continues to evolve its tactics.
The escalation comes amid calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow. Critics, however, point out that Trump has yet to implement new sanctions against Russia since taking office in January, even as Moscow continues its near-daily strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and civilian housing.
Analysts warn that the growing intensity and frequency of Russian aerial attacks are aimed at undermining Ukrainian morale, crippling vital infrastructure, and forcing political concessions—while inflicting increasing tolls on civilian life...////...
