Jammu Jan 16 (Reporter) Founder of Dr. Rubia Bukhari’s Cocoon Artistry initiative, Dr. Rubia Bukhari has highlighted the immense potential of Jammu and Kashmir to attract and develop Seri-Tourism—a unique fusion of sericulture and tourism that can promote the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
Speaking to UNI, Dr. Bukhari--popularly known as Cocoon Queen" for her tireless efforts to restore the lost glory of Sericulture in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasized the unparalleled opportunities SeriTourism presents for enhancing the local economy, generating employment and showcasing the region’s traditional silk production processes to global audiences.
She stated, “Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with a rich sericulture heritage, picturesque landscapes, and a tradition of craftsmanship that can be seamlessly integrated to create a sustainable model for SeriTourism." "This initiative can attract tourists who are eager to experience the journey of silk, from cocoon to cloth, while also boosting rural livelihoods.” Dr Bukhari added.
She also underscored the need for collaborative efforts between the government, local communities, and private stakeholders to develop SeriTourism infrastructure.
"This includes establishing silk trails, live demonstration centers, and eco-friendly workshops where tourists can engage with artisans and learn about the intricate art of sericulture and cocoon artistry," said the Sericulturist.
She further highlighted the potential of SeriTourism to empower women and youth by creating entrepreneurial opportunities and promoting skill development in rural areas. “SeriTourism is not just an economic venture but also a means to preserve and promote our cultural identity and traditional practices. Jammu and Kashmir can become a global hub for this innovative tourism model,” she added.
Dr. Bukhari’s Cocoon Artistry Initiative has been at the forefront of promoting sericulture and cocoon artistry as tools for community development and women empowerment.
Her vision for SeriTourism adds another dimension to the ongoing efforts to make Jammu and Kashmir a thriving center for sustainable tourism and creative industries.
Dr. Bukhari, a visionary in sericulture and founder of The Creative Cocoon: Dr. Rubia Bukhari’s Cocoon Artistry Initiative, conducted workshops across Poonch and Rajouri districts in collaboration with the Indian Army, benefiting participants. These programs, held in villages like Chamba, Ghambir, Dadtote and Darati and at GDC Poonch and Higher Secondary School Chamba Panjgrian, focused on skill development and entrepreneurship in cocoon artistry.
As In-Charge of the Department of Sericulture at Poonch Campus, University of Jammu, Dr. Bukhari has advanced innovative sericulture practices, earning recognition on national and international platforms. Her efforts align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Nari Shakti,” promoting women’s empowerment, self-reliance, and cultural preservation while addressing challenges like price instability and disease management.
Jammu and Kashmir is actively exploring the potential of "seri-tourism" to attract visitors and boost its economy by integrating sericulture with tourism.
Recent developments include the Central Silk Board’s focus on the region as a unique silk destination, the sanctioning of numerous rearing sheds under the Silk Samagra-2 scheme, and a significant revival project for the silk industry.
These initiatives aim to enhance silk production, provide sustainable livelihoods, and showcase Jammu and Kashmir’s rich sericulture heritage to both domestic and international tourists, reflecting the government’s commitment to economic development and cultural preservation...////...
