New Delhi, Dec 3 (Reporter) Members of Rajya Sabha on Tuesday demanded financial assistance for the devastation caused by Cyclone Fangel in Tamil Nadu, landslide in Wayanad, the Sambhal violence, pollution in Delhi and other issues.
After five days of stalemate, the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday saw the smooth functioning of the House.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) member M Mohamed Abdulla raised the issue of the devastating impact of Cyclone Fengal in several districts of Tamil Nadu, saying it has badly damaged the agriculture and infrastructure in the state and has led to the loss of lives and properties.
He demanded financial assistance of Rs 2000 crore for the affected areas. He also urged the Union Government to send a team to assess the damage caused due to the cyclone and ex-gratia should be announced for the affected people.
Moreover Marumalarchi Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (MDMK) member Vaiko said that many districts have been badly affected due to Cyclone Fengal. He said that the army should be sent to the state to help the local administration and financial assistance should also be given to the affected people.
Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav while raising the Sambhal issue said that on 19 November, a lawyer gave an application to the Munsif Magistrate to conduct a survey of the five hundred year old mosque in Sambhal. He said that action was taken within two hours and the survey was also conducted peacefully.
The SP member said that on November 24, Sambhal was turned into a police cantonment, which confused the people. The District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police and the petitioner's lawyer entered the mosque with police force.
Yadav stated the people suspected that they have gone into the mosque to carry out demolition.
He claimed that when the people saw the water pouring out of the mosque, they thought that something wrong was happening. Following that, the police opened fire and five people were killed and several others were injured.
The SP leader claimed that this was done in a planned manner to divert the attention from the rigging done in the recent by-elections in the districts adjoining Sambhal.
When the SP member tried to speak about the alleged misuse of police in the elections, the Chairman said that it will not go on record and asked Yadav to sit down.
On this, all SP members walked out of the House saying that their leader was not allowed to speak even for three minutes allotted for Zero Hour.
Meanwhile, Santhosh Kumar P of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded that the devastation caused by the landslide in Wayanad district of Kerala be declared a severe disaster, terming it as the worst disaster in the history of Kerala. More than 400 people lost their lives and more than hundred missing and numerous buildings have been destroyed.
Accusing the Central Government of discrimination, he said “We have sent a plan of more than Rs 2000 crore to the Centre for the rehabilitation of the affected people.
Kumar said that the Prime Minister has also visited the affected areas but no concrete result has been achieved so far. The CPI(M) member said that there may be political differences but politics should not be allowed to come in the way for such a situation.
