Guwahati, May 26 (Reporter) A day after senior Congress leader Ripun Bora tried to defend party MP Gaurav Gogoi against the allegation over his visit to Pakistan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the government will record Bora's statement and would take further action.
Bora, while addressing a press conference on Sunday, said that the wife of MP Gaurav Gogoi works for an international NGO, which has worked in different countries, including Pakistan.
“With regard to her work, she had received a salary from Pakistan; she had also visited Pakistan for her works. But is that enough to suspect her patriotism? Apart from Gaurav Gogoi, family members of many Indian politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen are working in Pakistan. Likewise, many Pakistanis are also legally working and doing business in India,” Bora had stated on Sunday.
“Yesterday (Sunday), senior Congress leader Ripun Bora made a startling confession — he admitted that the British wife of Hon’ble MP Sri Gaurav Gogoi was, in fact, on the payroll of the Pakistan government," said Sarma on his X handle on Monday.
"If this is indeed true, it raises deeply alarming questions about national security. The continued presence of an individual linked to a hostile foreign state — right within the inner circles of a sitting Member of Parliament — poses a serious threat to the integrity of India’s institutions," Sarma stated.
"We were not previously aware of these shocking details. Now that this revelation has come to light, the matter is being examined with the seriousness it demands. National security is non-negotiable. We will record the statement of Bora and take further action,” said Sarma on his X handle.
The Assam Chief Minister and Deputy leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi have been engaged in a bitter war of words for the last several months. The latest of this war is the allegation against Gaurav Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi working for an NGO connected to Pakistan-based climate change activist Ali Tauqueer Sheikh.
Congress leader Ripun Bora, during his press conference on Sunday, said that the Assam Chief Minister is scared of the growing popularity of Gaurav Gogoi across Assam and that it is for this reason that the Chief Minister was targeting Gaurav Gogoi by using the name of Pakistan.
“Sarma knows that there is speculation that Gogoi may be chosen by the party high command as the next chief ministerial candidate ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Sarma wants to tarnish the image of Gogoi by making him an ISI agent,” Bora said in the press conference...////...
