Pune, Oct 26 (Reporter) Following a challenging loss to New Zealand, India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma didn’t hold back in his assessment, describing the performance as a "collective failure" and calling for a fresh approach in the upcoming Test at Wankhede.
While Rohit acknowledged New Zealand’s superior play, he pinpointed several missed opportunities that cost India the match, which ended with New Zealand achieving a decisive victory.
"Disappointing. It’s not what we expected," Rohit stated post-match on Saturday. "You’ve got to give credit to New Zealand — they played better than us. We failed to capitalise on certain moments and respond to those challenges. And we sit here today having fallen short."
Rohit was particularly critical of India’s batting, which struggled to put up a solid first-innings total, leaving the bowlers with limited scope to create pressure. "You’ve got to pick 20 wickets to win, yes, but batters have to put runs on the board," he noted. "I didn’t think we batted well enough to get runs on the board."
Despite this, India’s bowlers staged a spirited comeback, restricting New Zealand to 259 after the visitors were well-set at 200 for 3, a performance Sharma called "a great fightback." However, he pointed out that the pitch conditions, which offered little assistance to bowlers, magnified the importance of a larger first-innings total.
Reflecting on the loss, Rohit took responsibility for the team’s collective shortcomings, saying, "It’s a collective failure. I’m not somebody who would blame just the batters or the bowlers. Everyone has areas to improve."
Looking ahead, Rohit stressed the need for India to approach the Wankhede Test with renewed "intent, ideas, and methods."
He expressed hope that the team would put up a more united performance to reverse the momentum in Mumbai.
