Gqeberha, Dec 6 (Reporter) After Ryan Rickelton’s fighting ton on the first day, the Sri Lanka batters showed grit to stand tall against South Africa’s bowling on second day of the second Test between the two sides.
After bowling out the Proteas in the first session, Sri Lanka were 116 runs behind the South Africa total at the end of day’s play with seven wickets in hand.
In the morning, Kyle Verreyne’s third Test ton helped South Africa to 358.
Vishwa Fernando, made up for his wicketless run on Day 1, picking scalps of Marco Jansen (4) and Keshav Maharaj (0) early on. Kagiso Rabada (23) gave a supporting hand to Verreyne, as South Africa crossed 300 with a watchful stand. Verreyne hit 12 fours and three sixes on the way to an eventful hundred, which was brought off with a six against Asitha Fernando.
Asitha and Lahiru Kumara ended the Proteas resistance and bundled out the hosts in the 104th over. They picked a wicket each to end up with a tally of three and four wickets in the first innings respectively.
In response, Sri Lanka openers withstood an asking spell from South Africa pacers adding 41 runs for the first wicket. Though Rabada got the better of Dimuth Karunaratne, getting him caught behind for 20, Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal held the fort and helped Sri Lanka to 103/1 at the end of the second session.
The next session saw Sri Lanka batters impress yet again, with Nissanka leading the charge. Though the opener missed out on a well-deserved ton, his 89 helped Sri Lanka reduce their deficit by a sizeable margin. Angelo Matthews and Kamindu Mendis kept the island nation steady with a positive partnership of 43 runs, and were unbeaten at the end of day’s play.
With South Africa leading the two game series 1-0, and important World Test Championships points on the line, Day 3 of the ongoing Test promises to be an exciting affair.
