Hosapete (Karnataka), May 20 (Reporter) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday announced a new land rights initiative, dubbing it the "sixth guarantee" of the Congress government in Karnataka.
Marking the completion of two years of the Siddaramaiah-led government, Rahul Gandhi asserted that the Congress had fulfilled its promise to return the people’s tax money through direct benefit schemes and would now focus on ensuring land ownership for the underprivileged.
Speaking at the Samarpane Sankalpa Rally here, the senior Congress leader said the issue of land ownership had long remained unresolved in Karnataka, particularly affecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Adivasi communities living in unrecognised revenue villages. "We noticed that though there is plenty of land, many people do not legally own it. With this sixth guarantee, we aim to rectify that historic injustice," he said.
Rahul Gandhi announced that the government would notify 500 new revenue villages and establish local guarantee committees to ensure rightful ownership of land for families currently without formal title. "Karnataka will be the first state in the country to implement universal land ownership. The land belongs to the people. This is our vision for social justice and inclusive development," he said.
Citing discussions with party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Rahul Gandhi said the initiative was part of a broader vision to economically empower marginalised communities.
Taking aim at the BJP, Rahul Gandhi accused the party of promoting a model that benefits only a few wealthy families. "Under the BJP's model, public money flows abroad, into properties in London and New York, whereas our model channels money into the hands of the poor and into the local economy," he said.
He further claimed that Congress welfare schemes, including Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti, had already benefitted millions. "More than one crore women are receiving monthly assistance under Gruha Lakshmi. Over 3.5 crore women have made 500 crore free trips under the Shakti scheme. Four crore people are receiving 10 kg of rice each month. Thousands of crores have been directly credited to bank accounts," he said.
Referring to the BJP’s earlier criticism of the Congress guarantees, Rahul Gandhi said, "The Prime Minister had said we would never deliver on our promises. But today, the proof is in people’s pockets. We have fulfilled every commitment made during the election...////...
